Will a 17 year old be charged as adult for a year felony in Maryland?

She is a first time offender, and shoplifted enough to warrant two loads of felony. However, She Does Have a hopeful future (Admitted to UMCP), has good grades and did well on SAT, etc.. What is the punishment for her Likely? And she will be charged as adult year? Should we be getting a lawyer for her? Or will there be a public defender Assigned to us?

  1. They will certainly do their best to try her as an adult. In America and many countries, anyone can and most likely will be tried as an adult once you turned 17. My brother was 16 when he got in trouble for drugs and they tried to keep him coming back to court as long as possible to be able to have the final verdict be when he was an adult (but cause it started when he was 16, they needed him to have at least one court date after he turned 18). So, if she gets sympathy from the court, and if she won’t turn 18 any time soon, she will probably be done with her punishment before she turns 18 and there’ll be a much better chance that she won’t get tried as an adult.
